This week's post is about copyright and fair use. Copyright is the law that protects a person's work from use through others or from copying.
Like most of the other things that I talked to on this blog, copyright can be compared to another aspect of school: plagiarism. They both deal with the concept of intellectual property and while copyright is intended to secure someone else's work, prevention of plagiarism is the practice of protecting others from being conned by people who display work of others as their own.
A thing to notice here is the practice of fair use. Fair use comes into play when only a portion of the copyrighted material is being used. Unlike in the complete copying of the work, fair use applies when the monetarization of the original work is not compromised, only a small portion of the material is copied and the purpose of the usage is not an unlawful one.
However, it is advisable to obtain copyright in any situation of using someone else's work. Since fair use is only a guideline and not a proper law like copyright, the use of other people's work can be interpreted in a lot of different ways. So in general, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
