This week I tried to design my own assistive technology. I was very inspired by all the apps that are available in the app store and wanted to see if I could contribute.
Form the start, I was set on designing something that focuses around sign language. Being multilingual myself, I know how much joy and value another language can bring into one's life. I also knew that there were different kinds of sign languages, just like there are languages, out there. This gave me the idea to design an app that teaches sign languages similar to apps like Duolingo or Babble. Additionally, the app would feature a translation function.
I think that an app like this could be very beneficial for all types of people: An able-bodied person could learn sign language this way and a hearing or speech impaired person could use the app to find a way to learn the language of a country that they want to visit. This way they could understand and connect to the locals that speak sign language. The app would also be beneficial if a disabled person would want to move or study abroad. This would be made even easier by the translation function. Just typing a word could show someone the appropriate signs that are needed to communicate their thoughts.
Sadly, I do not have the technical know-how to actually build the app but I hope someday someone will realize this idea since it could help the disabled population to be more integrated into society.
