One important skill to have in the 21st century is to know how to tell a story online. This can be done through a written piece, like this blog post, an audio recording or a video. Digital Storytelling is, in fact, very similar to essays that one had to write in school. Like in an essay, the story that will be told is split up into sections:
- The Introduction
Taking this post as an example, this is the text, written above. It usually states what the piece will be about and contains a thesis (like my comparison of digital storytelling to school essays) that will be examined in the next step. - The Body
This is the current part of this blog post. It goes into detail about the subject of the piece. Usually, it is also split into a few different parts, just like the list that I put in here. - The Conclusion
This part restates part of the introduction, like the thesis, and presents a short summary of the whole piece. In the example of this blog post, this is the following text.
Overall, if one knows how to write an essay for school, one is equipped to digitally tell a story. This basic outline can be used for all different kinds of media. And since every kind of media can be recorded or written by using a script, a good start would be to write an outline using the steps above.
And lastly, for visualization of these steps in different media, below is a video (and also an audio example if one is only listening and not watching) by YouTuber Niomi Smart, where she talks about social media and self-esteem. Can you figure out where the introduction, the body, and the conclusion start and end?
